Misc. Notes
Major Thomas Brooke came in 1650 with his father to Maryland where he
received grants of land of many thousand acres. The largest of these
was
Brookfield in the woods on the west side of Patuxent River, bounded
on the North by Brooke or Mattaponi Creek, on the E. by Patuxent
River, on the S. by Deep or Spicer's Creek and extending W. to a
line marked by a stone on which were cut the letters 'T. B.', the
initials of the grantee. The present little village of T.B. in
Prince George's County, which is there located, takes its name from
this stone. In the 'Services of Ancestors,' Colonial Wars, is found:
"Thomas Brooke, 1632-1676, Captain of Calvert Co. Militia 1658;
Major, 1660; Burgess for Calvert Co.,1663-69, 1671-76; High Sheriff,
1660-67; Chief Justice, Cal. Co., 1667. To his godsons, Baker Brooke,
Jr and Thomas Gardiner, he left personality.
