Notes for Nicolas Gaylord (Gaillard)
All per Ancestry File - NOT VERIFIED Hi, According to the information I have, Nicholas Gaylord was most likely born in Somerset, England, as there are a couple of John Gaylards in the area in the 1400s. He did marry Johanne Sevenoak (Sevenocke) probably about 1527 or 1528. He appears on account rolls at Poundisford in 1526/7 where he pays 3s 4d with Johanna Sevenock. then in the 1530/1 rolls he appears as the husband of Johanna Sevenock. He most likely was born around 1500-1505 to make him an adult in 1526/7. The identification of Nicholas Gaylard's wife as Joan(na) Sevenock/Sevenoak was revealed by me during a lecture tour I made in New England in 1985. Details of my research into the Gaylards/Gaylords of Pitminster and the ancestry of Joan Sevenoak for a further three generations (and possibly five generations) have just been published in The Search for the Passengers of the Mary & John, 1630, vol. 27, pp.63-82, edited by Burton W. Spear 5602 305th St. Toledo, Ohio 43611. Copies cost $23.00 plus $3.25 shipping and handling. Full extracts from the manorial records are given, translated from the original Latin. The intriguing aspect is that, although royal descents are relatively common in genealogy, the Sevenoaks were serfs (slaves) and I know of no other documented descent from medieval serfs in any other genealogy. The article also deals with the Treat family in similar detail. Robin Bush, historian, Taunton, UK
