Have you tried contacting Thomas Beard who wrote an excellent book
entitled TRACING YOUR ROOTS ? I'll bet he is connected in some way
with you. The last I heard he was Director at the New York Public
Library. I would love to get another copy of his book--mine was
borrowed or stolen a long time ago and now I can't find another copy.
He talks about this Beard ancestry and how he traced it within the
book.

Good luck. Diane

You might want to contact Beard Concrete Company, 127 Boston Post
Road, Milford, CT 06460. They are owned by the Beard family of
Milford and I believe they have been in the area for quite some time.
You could also contact the Milford Public Library,57 New Haven
Avenue, Milford, CT 06460. They have a nice local history and
geneology room.

Charles, you will likely want to concentrate your research on the
descendants of Martha Beard who was among the founding group at
Milford, Connecticut, in 1639. Her family group is covered fairly
well in the "Baird and Beard Families" authored by Fermine Baird
Catchings at Louisville circa 1911. This book has more value for
some Baird researchers than others, depending upon how well or
accurately her collected data is covered. Martha Beard had
descendants who went to New York. The following items may give you
some geographic starting points, with the first item being a stronger
possibility:

Charles Beard, married to Sarah Ann Clark April 13, 1788. Went from
Milford to Goshen, Orange County, New York. He was son of George
Beard and Mary _____. "He may have had other children. One son was
James Clark Beard, born1803, died 1898, who had a son, Niram Curtis
Rundal Beard, who had a son, James Clark Beard, who had a son, Curtis
J. Beard, of New York City." Page 202.

[Ruth Beard provides no other information on this Charles Beard/Sarah
Ann Clark other than their marriage date and states "No further
record of this Beard family.]

Others among Martha Beard descendants who early removed to New York:

"David, son of David and Anne Beard, born 1755 in Huntington, Conn.
Married, first, Polly or Mercy, daughter of Captain Beach and Charity
Tomlinson, 1789. She died 1793. He married, second, Ruth, daughter
of Ruth Holbrook and James Beard, 1795. In 1834 he moved to Pompey,
N.Y., with his son David. He died there." Page 201. (See item for
the grandson, Beach, below.)

[Ruth Beard, in her "Genealogy of the Descendants of Widow Martha
Beard of Milford, Conn.," says: David, born June 7, 1755, in
Huntington, Conn. He married (1) Polly (or Mercy), daughter of Capt.
Beach and Charity (Shelton) Tomlinson, June 21, 1789. Wife died July
28, 1793, aged 31 years. He married (2) Ruth, daughter of James and
Ruth (Holbrook) Beard, in 1795. In 1834, he moved to Pompey, N.Y.,
with his son, David, and died there. Page 21.]

Samuel, son of Samuel and Elizabeth Wheeler Beard, born 1779
Huntington, Conn. Married Articretia Wooster 1804. Lived Oxford,
N.Y., and Troy, Pa. Died 1875. Page 202.

[Ruth Beard: Samuel, born April 16, 1779. He married Articretia,
daughter of Ephraim Wooster, Sept. 23, 1804. About 1824, he moved to
Oxford, N.Y., and later to Troy, Penn. He died Sept. 24, 1875, in
Troy. Wife born Feb. 10, 1784. Wife died Jan. 17, 1855, in Troy.

Ira Beard, son of Andrew and Nancy Camp Beard. Born 1821 Milford,
Conn. Married Isabella Orr Shaw, 1850, possibly at Brooklyn, N.Y.
Died 1880. Page 203.

[Ruth Beard: Ira, born Aug. 19, 1821. He married Isabella Orr,
daughter of Rev. Peter Hattrick Shaw, of Brooklyn, N.Y., July 3,
1850. He died Feb. 4, 1880, in Brooklyn, N.Y., where they lived."

Beach Beard, son of David and Polly Tomlinson Beard, born 1791.
Married Frances Curtis 1816. Resided in Fayetteville, N.Y. Died
1881. Page 204.

[Ruth Beard: Beach, born May 8, 1791. He married Frances Curtis,
March 25, 1816. He died Nov. 1, 1881. Wife born April 15, 1798.
Wife died July 24, 1880. Their residence was in Fayetteville, N.Y.

Mrs. Shirley Hegeman
64 Woodside Avenue
Oneonta, New York
13820

Dear Mrs. Hegeman:

Mary Briggs, former historian of Davenport, recommended that I write to you regarding an inquiry on some of my ancestors. I enclose the letter I sent her as well as provide a bit more
information.

My primary families in Otsego County are BARD, BENSON, and CHESTNEY. The BARD family begins with Russell Bard (1774/5-1848 d. New Lisbon) and Bathanna Briggs
(1769/70-1846 d. New Lisbon). They had Richard, Brice and Polly. Brice married Abigail BENSON and Polly married John BENSON. Brice (1804-1888 d. New Lisbon) and Abigail had
George M. Bard who married Carrie M. Martin (1858-1931). Their daughter Fidelia Adelaide married Wilson Horace Chestney, son of Sherman Veeder CHESTNEY. This ties into the letter
I attach.

If you have any information on these families, I would appreciate receiving copies. If there is expense, please advise. I enclose a self addressed stamped envelope.

Sincerely,

Charles Mudd
