Notes for Mary Carro Polin (Spouse 1) |
Mrs. Mary Carro Polin (Montgomery) Ryan
[Sometimes known as "Carrie", though Joseph Peter Mudd (I thought his
wife said it) stated that she used to say "My name is Carro, not
Carrie." But, it is "Carrie" on both marriage certificates. Clara?
Per Mary Jo Maguire, President Washington County Historical Society,
"CARRO" is "the Latin equivalent the priest used for 'Carrie' (St.
Charles)" See letter dated November 18, 1998 located in general Mudd
file.]
There is little or no doubt that she was the DAUGHTER of William
Peter and Martha Ann Carrico Montgomery. Since she married a Ryan, it
would be hard for her to be the daughter-in-law to anyone other than
a Ryan. Probably another error in a census, which is not unusual.

Charles - My copy of the "1880 Federal Census Washington Co. Ky." by
Faye Sea Sanders (1990) lists household #111 in Springfield, District
#9 as follows:
WILLIAM P. MONTGOMERY H 46 Farmer
Martha A. " W 33 Housekeeper
John T. " S 16
Bob E. Lee " S 14
Annie Laura " D 12
W.E. " S 10
Mary C. " D 8
Samuel J. " S 6
Lilly May " D 4
Charles Hampton " S 1
As you can see Mary C. Montgomery is clearly listed as a daughter of
William P. Montgomery & Martha Ann Carrico (married 30 Dec. 1862 in
Washington Co.) in the 1880 census. The 1900 Washington Co. census
does show a Carrie Montgomery (b. Mar. 1872) as the dau.-in-law of
William P. Montgomery. However, Carrie appears to be the wife of
William P.'s son John Thomas Montgomery.
