This information was sent to me some years ago and was marked as
compiled by Pat Downes of Rockville MD.

<Little has been learned of JOHN YATES of Saint Mary's County,
Maryland after he assigned his rights to land to THOMAS BROOKS, and
noting the fact that this assignment took place in January 1673, and
that MARTIN (YATES) became possessor of part of "TURVEY" in September
of 1673, the presumption is that the assignment was made for the
purpose of securing a larger grant of land to his son MARTIN.

Early Settlers Books, Land Office, Annapolis Maryland: Liber 17,
Folio 575, 15 Jan 1673. "Came JOHN YATES of St. Mary's County and
proved his rights to fifty acres of land, it being due for him for
his time of service which he assigns to JOHN BROOKS, 5 Jan 1673.
signed JOHN YATES(seal)

JOHN YATES is a witness for the will of TOM SEWELL in 1677,
Dorchester Co. MD. John is also a witness for the wills of JOHN
HUMBERSTONE, 1684 and THOMAS LONG, 1684, no county listed for
either.>

I don't know that I would agree that John Yates was the father of
Martin. I believe that Martin was probably the immigrant, but I have
nothing to back that up other than his deposition below (which is
some years off in terms of age).

6/16/1715: Deposition of Martin Yates, age 39. He stated he was a
servant to Henry Darnall about 30 years before.

1757-1758 Martin Yates, b. 1700, son of Martin, b. 1666 owned
"Turvey" 93 ac. which had been owned 1754-1756 by Margaret Yates. I
don't know who Margaret Yates is--is she his mother maybe? That's
the only connection with "Turvey" I've found so far and it's quite a
few years later.
